Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Gurnard Primary School follows the national Code of Practice for SEN and Disability (2014). We work hard to make a positive difference for those children that may need additional or specialist support and offer a range of interventions and ways of supporting learning.
Our priority is to identify your child's individual needs and provide support for them to learn, feel good about themselves and find ways of achieving success. To achieve this we work in close partnership with parents, carers, families, outside agencies, feeder pre-schools and secondary schools.
Where a child in our school has been identified as needing SEN Support we will take positive steps to remove barriers to learning. We follow a 4-step cycle (assess, plan, do, review) to ensure that the child makes good progress and achieves good outcomes. A small percentage of children may require an Education Health Care Plan issued by the Local Authority. Their needs must first be assessed through a statutory assessment. Schools and parents can request this if the child's needs meet the criteria set by the Local Authority. We will talk to parents and carers at each stage of this process.
All children with a Special Educational Need and/or Disability will have a Learning Plan. These are reviewed every term and shared with parents/carers.

- the school’s admission arrangements for pupils with SEN or disabilities
- the steps our school has taken to prevent pupils with SEN or disabilities from being treated less favourably than other pupils
- access facilities for pupils with SEN
- our school accessibility for pupils with disabilities
- the process and support available from the school for parents of children with SEN or disabilities who may wish to make a complaint.

Isle of Wight Local Offer
The Isle of Wight Council is committed to giving all children and young people high quality education that enables them to make progress and achieve well. For children and young people aged 0-25 with special educational needs or a disability, additional or specialist support may be needed to enable this.
